France helicopter crash: Firefighting Helicopter Crashes into Lake in France, Crew Safe
A firefighting helicopter in France crashed into a lake on Sunday while trying to collect water to fight nearby wildfires. The accident happened in Rosporden, western France, as the aircraft lowered its bucket into the water.
How the Crash Happened
Witnesses said the helicopter suddenly lost control and started spinning before falling straight into the lake. The tail of the aircraft appeared to hit the water first, which caused it to flip and crash.
Crew Survived Without Injuries
There were two people on board – the pilot and a firefighter. Both managed to escape quickly and swam to safety. Emergency teams arrived soon after, and the pair were found unharmed, though shaken.
Helicopter Was Busy Fighting Fires
Reports say the same helicopter had already carried out more than 25 water drops earlier in the day while battling a large wildfire nearby. The accident happened during a refill run, which is a routine part of such operations.
Backup Sent to Continue the Mission
Authorities immediately sent another helicopter to replace the downed aircraft, so firefighting efforts in the area could continue without delay.
Wildfire Situation in France
Large parts of France have been struggling with wildfires this summer, with flames spreading quickly in dry and windy conditions. Thousands of hectares of land have been damaged, and firefighters have been working day and night to bring the blazes under control.
