Uttar Pradesh News : Rising Yamuna River Threatens Riverfront Near Taj Mahal in Agra

Local administration in Agra has started keeping a close eye on the situation. Water levels are being recorded daily, and alerts are issued if there is any risk to people living along the riverfront.

The water level of the Yamuna river is rising rapidly in Agra, UP, due to which there is a threat of flood on the Taj Mahal.
The Yamuna river has risen sharply due to heavy rainfall and barrage releases, flooding low-lying areas in Delhi, Mathura and Agra.

Water Level of River Yamun Reaching the Danger Mark

Danger Mark : its water level is reaching or exceeding a predetermined height that signals a potential flood, triggering warnings and safety measures for nearby communities and infrastructure. 

Rising Water Discharge from Barrages

Continuous heavy rainfall in the upper regions has pushed the Yamuna River above the danger mark in Mathura. To manage the flow, the discharge from Gokul Barrage was increased from 50,000 cusecs to 75,467 cusecs. Extra water released from the Tajewala and Okhla Barrages has added to the rising levels.

In Agra, several riverfront spots including Kailash Ghat, Balkeshwar Ghat, Hathi Ghat, and Dussehra Ghat are already submerged. At the Water Works point, the Yamuna has touched 494 feet, just one foot below the official flood warning mark of 495 feet. Authorities have cautioned that the water level may rise further in the coming days.

Nearby Villages are in Danger

In the Terai region of Bah, several villages including Rampur Chandraseni, Balai, Sunsar, Bithauli, Vikrampur Ghat, Charitha, Garhi Barauli, and Bag Gudiyana are on high alert as the Yamuna continues to swell. These areas are among the first to face flooding whenever the river rises.

Local residents are keeping a close watch on the water level, while many families have already started taking precautionary steps to safeguard their homes, valuables, and livestock. Meanwhile, district authorities have assured people that continuous monitoring is underway and that emergency support will be provided whenever required.
